Title
- Conversation with Nick Gaitan
Summary
- Houston’s native son, Nick Gaitan, is a singer-songwriter, bandleader, and music historian, with deep roots in the wide-ranging musical culture of Houston’s East End and the broader Gulf Coast. Gaitan is proficient in the many genres of music that co-exist in the region ranging from Tejano and conjunto to honky-tonk, blues, rockabilly and soul and ska. The occasion for this interview was a concert performance in the Coolidge Auditorium, entitled Tejas Roots Music from Houston, featuring Gaitan and his ensemble. The concert was held in conjunction with a symposium highlighting documentation projects funded by AFC’s multi-year Community Collections Grant program. In this conversation with AFC senior folklorist, Guha Shankar, Gaitan talks about his musical journey and reflects on the performers he interviewed for the 2022 CCG initiative, “Sonidos de Houston: Documenting the City’s Chicano Music Scene.”
