FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Title as abbreviated for indexing or identification. An abbreviated key title is supplied by ISSN centers, based on the Key Title (Field 222). Other abbreviated titles are supplied by cataloging agencies, including abstracting and indexing services.

Abbreviated title may be created by the agency supplying the field or it may be taken from the piece.

Second Indicator - Type

Type of abbreviated title.

# - Abbreviated key title

Abbreviated title is based on the title contained in field 222 (Key Title). It is assigned by national centers under the auspices of the ISSN Network in accordance with ISO 4, Documentation - Rules for the Abbreviation of Title Words and Titles of Publications and List of Serial Title Word Abbreviations. The abbreviated key title is an agency-assigned data element.

0 - Other abbreviated title

Abbreviated title is other than an abbreviated key title.

CONTENT DESIGNATOR HISTORY

Indicator 1 - Title added entry [NEW, 1977]

Records created prior to the definition of the first indicator in 1977 may contain # meaning undefined in this position.

Indicator 2 - Type [NEW, 1998]

When the field was redefined to include non-key title abbreviations in 1998, value blank was redefined to identify key titles. Value blank in pre 1998 records also identifies key titles since only key title abbreviations allowed in the field before that date.
