SOURCE: PCC URIs in MARC Pilot Project
SUMMARY: This paper proposes adding subfields $0 (Authority record control number or standard number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) for URIs in field 375 (Gender) of the MARC 21 Authority Format

RELATED: 2009-01/1;
STATUS/COMMENTS:
08/07/20 – Submitted to the MARC Steering Group for consideration as a MARC Fast-Track proposal.
08/27/20 – Results of MARC Steering Group review - Approved
12/01/20 – Changes made to the MARC documentation as part of MARC Update No. 31 (December 2020).
The PCC URIs in MARC Pilot Project is experimenting with and developing techniques and best practices for adding URIs in MARC authority and bibliographic records. Participants have been adding URIs to many of the authority fields in which subfields $0 (Authority record control number or standard number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been established.
When Authority field 375 (Gender) was created in 2009 (MARC Proposal No. 2009-01/1), subfield $0 was not included, because it was not considered relevant. At the time, RDA contained a controlled list of terms for gender. RDA was subsequently revised to remove this vocabulary. RDA 9.7.1.3 now says "Select a term from a standard list, if available." The Gender Code and Term Source Codes list maintained by NDMSO lists a number of sources that may be used in the 375 field. Vocabularies that include terms for gender may also be found in the Subject Heading and Term Source Codes list.
When subfields $0 and $1 were added to numerous Authority fields in 2017 (MARC Proposal No. 2017-08), the 375 field was not included. However, since both authority record control numbers or standard numbers and real world object URIs are available for gender terms, it would have been appropriate to include them in that field. In addition, adding $0 and $1 would allow MARC authorities to support the identifier and IRI recording methods in the beta RDA toolkit.
