This diagram illustrates the manner in which loss is introduced in both binary (Group 4 compression) systems and grayscale (JPEG compression) systems. At each stage in the diagram, the number of bits remaining for the representation of a pixel is specified. It highlights the fact that thresholding a binary image from the original introduces quantization loss.
