NACO Series Training

Series Training for PCC Participants: Series Statements and Series Authority Records

Preliminary Edition: May 2014, with updates through March 2023

These training materials are designed for NACO Program members who are already contributing name authority records and who wish to begin contributing series authority records. Important Note: These training modules are freely available to anyone to use at any time. However, non-PCC members wishing to contribute RDA series authority records to the LC/NACO Authority File must make formal training arrangements through the PCC Secretariat

This manual, a revision of the 2007 Series Training for PCC Participants by Judith A. Kuhagen, and the exercises that accompany it were prepared by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging Standing Committee on Training’s RDA Series Training Task Group. The PCC SCT RDA Series Training Task Group had the following participants: Carl Horne, chair (Indiana Univ.), Mary Jane Cuneo (Harvard Univ.), Julie Dyles Darken (Univ. of Georgia), Peter Fletcher (Univ. of Calif. at Los Angeles), Lisa Furubotten (Texas A&M Univ.), Jenifer Marquardt (Univ. of Georgia), Robert L. Maxwell (Brigham Young Univ.), Melanie Polutta (Library of Congress), George Prager (New York Univ., Law), Steven Riel (Harvard Univ.), and Beth Thornton (Univ. of Georgia).

Policy questions were forwarded to the PCC SCT Series Policy Task Force consisting of Ed Jones (National Univ.), Robert Maxwell (Brigham Young Univ.), George Prager (New York Univ., Law), and Paul Priebe (Univ. of Calif. at Los Angeles). Recommendations on many policy issues have already been made by this group, and PCC decisions will ultimately be incorporated in the series manual. At this time this preliminary edition of the manual includes recommendation synopses at relevant points throughout.

An email account has been set up for general questions about series work, as well as questions about individual series: [email protected].

Catalogers may become independent for series authority records in RDA by doing the following:

Go through the training in a formal setting (for example, a live session organized by the PCC)

Go through the training as self-paced instruction

Once you have completed the training:

If you are working with a current reviewer for NACO NARs, you can use that reviewer to also review series, if that person already contributes SARs and agrees to it. Please inform the review group at [email protected]. Your reviewer will decide when you are independent and inform the PCC Secretariat.

If you do not have a current reviewer, you may instead submit a request for one to [email protected].

Please report any feedback on the training modules to [email protected].
