Born in Tokyo to Canadian missionary parents, Kerr Eby studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York City before volunteering for the U.S. Army in 1917. He served with the 40th Engineers, Artillery Brigade, Camouflage Division in France where he saw battle action at Belleau Wood, Meuse-Argonne, Château-Thierry, and Saint-Mihiel.
