- Correspondence, memoranda, diaries, speeches, newspaper clippings, and other papers relating chiefly to Griscom's diplomatic career and to his military service during World War I. Documents his years as minister to Iran (1901-1902) and ambassador to Japan (1902-1906) and Italy (1907-1909) as well as his World War I service in France as liaison officer to General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, U.S. Army. Griscom describes a trip to Messina, Italy, following the 1908 earthquake; a 1908 meeting with German Emperor William II concerning President Theodore Roosevelt's appointment of David Jayne Hill as ambassador to Berlin; and the reaction of Pershing, his staff, and President Woodrow Wilson's daughter, Margaret Woodrow Wilson, to the news of the armistice. Correspondents include Mabel Thorp Boardman, Arthur Meeker, John J. Pershing, Elihu Root, Francis Lynde Stetson, Wesley Winans Stout, William H. Taft, and members of the Griscom family.
