Newspaper Crystal River News (Crystal River, Fla.) 1905-????

About Crystal River News (Crystal River, Fla.) 1905-????

Very little is known about the Crystal River News. Entries appear in Ayer’s Newspaper Directories from 1907 to 1913. Florida State University reports a single issue from 1903, and the Old Courthouse in Inverness holds scattered issues from 1911 through 1916. The first editor and publisher was A.S. King, 1907-08; the second John Edwards Bell, 1909-12?; and last J.A. Logan, 1913-14?. The Crystal River News appeared first on Thursdays, then later on Fridays. Serving Citrus County, the weekly newspaper was affiliated with the Democratic Party. During the tenure of the first two editors, it was owned by the Crystal Publishing Company.

It is not surprising that so little is known today about the Crystal River News, which had a circulation of only three hundred. The region’s warm, humid climate and the fact that archiving of newspapers in Florida began only in the 1920s, means that the obscurity of this particular title is typical for many small newspapers of this period.

About this Newspaper

Title

  • Crystal River News (Crystal River, Fla.) 1905-????

Summary

  • Very little is known about the Crystal River (FL) news [LCCN: sn98026432]. Various editions of Ayer's newspaper directories and inventories resulting from U.S. Newspaper Program: Florida (USNP:FL) (completed in the mid-1990s) provide scant records. Entries appear in Ayer's from 1907 to 1913. But Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL) reported a single 1903 issue to the USNP:FL; and the Old Courthouse in Inverness, Florida reported scattered issues from 1911 through 1916. There is no record of the Crystal River news either before 1903 or after 1916. The first editor and publisher was A.S. King, 1907-1908; the second John Edwards Bell, 1909 -1912?; and last J.A. Logan, 1913-1914?. Nothing is known of these men. The paper was weekly, issued first on Thursdays, then later on Fridays. Serving Citrus County (FL), it claimed a Democrat party affiliation. During the tenure of the first two editors the publisher was Crystal Publishing Company. Nothing currently (ca. 2007) is known of this company. It is not surprising that so little information is available as Ayer's lists the circulation at 300. Considering Florida's climate and the initiation of archiving activities only during the Florida Land Boom of the 1920's, these circumstances are typical of the loss to the State of Florida's newspaper history. --E. Kesse, University of Florida Digital Library Center.
