Title
- As Ever, Oscar: Letters and Lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II
Summary
- Oscar Hammerstein virtually invented the modern musical with his librettos and lyrics for shows that include "Show Boat", "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "South Pacific", "The King and I", "Cinderella", and "The Sound of Music". The Library is home to the Hammerstein Collection, which includes over 20,000 letters from and to Oscar. Mark Horowitz programmed a concert that intersperses songs with readings from letters that relate to them. You'll hear well-known and much-loved songs (with a few obscurities) while getting rare insights into the extraordinary man behind them. This program was presented in association with Signature Theatre and with generous support from the Kluge Center. Conceived and narrated by Mark Horowitz, Music Division; Eric Schaeffer, Director; Jon Kalbfleisch, Music Director ; Tracy Lynn Olivera, soprano | Awa Sal Secka, mezzo soprano ; Ben Pattison, tenor | Christopher M. Richardson, bass/baritone ; Harry Winter, Oscar Program: [:28] Richard Rodgers: "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma!; [5:30] Jerome Kern: "All the Things You Are" from Very Warm for May; [10:23] Jerome Kern: "Ol' Man River" from Show Boat; [15:39] Richard Rodgers: "June is Bustin' Out All Over" from Carousel; [19:32] Richard Rodgers: "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from Oklahoma!; [21:33] Richard Rodgers: "Bird Medley," arranged by Louis Danowsky; [30:38] Jerome Kern: "The Last Time I Saw Paris"; [37:23] Richard Rodgers: "Hello, Young Lovers" from The King and I; [43:20] Richard Rodgers: "100 Million Miracles" from Flower Drum Song; [49:50] Richard Rodgers: "All Kinds of People" from Pipe Dream; [55:18] Richard Rodgers: "Carefully Taught" from South Pacific; [1:02:20] Richard Rodgers: "No Way to Stop It" from The Sound of Music; [1:07:48] Richard Rodgers: "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" from Cinderella; [1:12:58] Jerome Kern: "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" from High, Wide and Handsome; [1:17:14] Richard Rodgers: "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel
