What is The Source?

Have you ever heard the phrase “let’s go to the source?” We’re all about primary sources — those items from history that were made by the people who lived it! Our new experiential gallery was named after the primary sources we have at the Library of Congress. This new space was designed for and with youth to inspire kids and teens to take on the role of researchers both onsite and after they return home. With 4,000 square-feet of space to explore, visitors will have the chance to investigate material from the Library’s image, film, sound, and text collections.

Onsite programs include school group field trips, Source Spotlight demonstrations and interactive carts, once a month Family Day programs, teen internships, and more.

Online resources include Minerva’s Kaleidoscope blog for families, resources for educators, and downloadable collections-based activities to do at home. Come on in, let’s go to The Source!

The Source Behind The Scenes

This behind-the-scenes video shows a timelapse of workers, in their green safety vests, building and moving exhibit material in The Source. Follow along as we show close-ups of different areas of The Source including a video of a librarian, digital screens with prompts, collection materials, and colorful arches framing the exhibition spaces. Other features include signs saying "Welcome to The Source," "Be a Researcher," and "How Big is the Library of Congress" appear displayed on The Source's walls.
