Main Reading Room. Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building, Washington, D.C., Carol Highsmith, photographer

Notice: Appointments are required for entry into Library facilities, and everyone must follow the health and safety protocols established by the Library, in consultation with public health professionals (Most of these protocols are mandatory, regardless of vaccination status). Library users do not need to make an appointment to obtain or renew a Reader Card. However, users must obtain a time-ticketed pass or reading room appointment (if applicable) to come onsite to complete their reader card registration. For additional instructions, see the Pandemic Information for Researchers page.

Effect of weather delays on Library of Congress hours: If the federal government announces a closure or delay for federal agencies in Washington DC for any reason, the Library of Congress’s hours for visitors and researchers will follow the same schedule.  For example, if a delay of two hours is announced for federal agencies, the Library of Congress will open two hours later than posted public hours. If federal agencies in Washington DC close for the day, the Library will not open to the visitors or researchers on that day.
