Summary

  • This book provides an overview of the location and quality of the mineral springs located in the mountainous region around Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia. The author, Joseph Rehmann (1779-1831), was a German medical doctor who lived in Russia around the turn of the 19th century. In 1805, Rehmann was part of a diplomatic mission sent by Tsar Alexander I to the Qing Court in Peking to seek an agreement with the Manchu rulers of China on expanding trade between Russia and China. Because of difficulties with protocol, the mission, under the command of Count Yury Golovkin, never reached Peking and thus was ultimately unsuccessful. Rehmann had the additional task on this trip of making an assessment of the mineral springs around Lake Baikal, which the Golovkin mission passed in February 1806 on its return from Mongolia. The waters became the focus of the work presented here. As a medical doctor, Rehmann wrote extensively on the medicinal potential of these Siberian (Turkic) mineral springs. The book contains several chapters that describe various aspects of these natural springs, including their location, the chemical composition and temperature of their waters, the quantities of salt and gases they contain and the need for the construction of more bath facilities and related sanitariums to tap the healing potential of the waters. In highlighting various mineral sources, the author further specifies the sites of both major and minor springs around Lake Baikal. He also comments on the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. Rehmann often cites the scientific research and naturalist writings of noted German scientist Johann Gottlieb Georgi, among others, who had worked in Siberia in the late 18th century and had a particular interest in and expertise about the Lake Baikal region. Rehmann notes that the native Buryat and Tungus (Evenki) peoples had highly valued these mineral springs for centuries before the arrival of the Russians. Rehmann produced the manuscript for this book in German, after which it was translated into Russian and published for this edition. World Digital Library.
